Le duo anglais A Mountain Of One délivre ses influences dans ce Phrench Phries Podcast Vol.12

Déjà auteurs d’un premier album en forme de compilation de maxis, le bien nommé “Collected Works“, et en passe de livrer “Institute Of Joy“, son premier réel long format, le duo formé de Zeb et Mo’ tient à rappeler d’où il vient avec cette sélection où se cotoient Spacemen 3, Tangerine Dream et la voix carveneuse de Tom Waits.

On leur a également posé quelques questions existentielles :

Spacemen 3 –Ecstacy Symphony

Early , ambient genius of one of my heroes jason pierce - so heady sounding. Inspired the ambient piece “purple” on the new record – just shows you can make ambient music with real weight and intent .

Undisputed Truth - Down By The River
Down by the river is my favourite neil young song ever written,  and in my top 3 songs ever written - when i first heard about the existence of this cover i thought it was an impossibility to better or equal the original - well…i was wrong - this blew my socks off – so spiritual - so beautifully cosmic - the gospel feel had a massive impact on zeben and i  for the backing vox on our new album….

Nirvana – Oh Me
My favourite nirvana song ever made - this was originally written by the meat puppets but feels like it was written especially for cobain when featured on the “unplugged” album. The lyrics when sung by cobain are immense - “i dont have to think, i only have to do it , the results are always perfect …hey but thats old news - ” makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck everytime. - sung with delicate confidence and swagger - when cobain nails the vocal on this  - he is pretty much unbeatable especially when stripped back and with only an accoustic guitar to support his bowed body and head.

The James Gang - Collage
Features on james gangs first album “yer album” - most beautiful strings and vox and groove. Light years ahead for that period. Joe walsh is really something else - was a big influence on our single bones - drums and strings - drums and strings !!!!!!

Tangerine Dream –Love On A Real Train
This was a big influence on the album track “ahead of the curve” , its melancholy trance and mood, has depth whilst remaining sexy and hypnotic. One of tangerine dreams finest moments for me.

Alex - And
This is from alex , a obscure turkish psych artist from the 70s. It features jaki leibzet on skins from the “infamous” can. The drums and rhythm section are quite incredible. Like a fuzzed out garage “love” the drums are a hook within them self and so free and wonky they have a life of their own. A huge inspiration for a couple tracks on our album. The album on vinyl is as rare as hens teeth.

Mason Williams – Classical Gas
Obscure - beautiful acoustic piece - soars and dreams up pictures of deserts and the dusty open road.

Thin Lizzy – Downtown Sundown
Epic , groovy hendrix style hippy soul. Phil lynnots touching torch song and his ode to “love”. Beautifully groovey and addictive,played a lot during the writing of “institute of joy” features on thin lizzys album “bad reputation”

T-Rex – lifes an elevator
Just perfect - how to make a song sound huge with only acoustic guitar , voice and effects - great lyrics and sentiment - which really touched us. Big inspiration on our sone “knife of the sultan”

Tom Waits reads Bukowski
This is the legend tom waits reading a charles bukowski poem grabbed from youtube. I guess everybody gets a different thing from this – i get inner strength, beauty and comfort for it - wise wise words bukowski - perfectly delivered with voodoo qualities from the genius of tom waits.

Sian Alice Group - Motionless
These are an amazing new-ish psych-folk outfit from london. I recently saw them supporting spiritualized at koko and they totally blew me away. It was like watching a religious cult on stage - all locked into each other like they were one. Hypnotic , tribal , full of atmosphere and bewitching. The most exciting new band i have seen for a long long time. This features on their last album and is breathtaking. They are old friends of zebens and zebs younger sister sasha plays violin, keys and supplys backing vox - so we may play at some sort of “happening” together in the near future.
